Meaning: provided that, on condition that.

Martha won’t know anything about the surprise party as long as you don’t tell her.

You will never be old as long as you are seeking friendships.

As opposed to

Meaning: in contrast with, rather than.

It’s 25 degrees today as opposed to 10 degrees yesterday.

At the same time

Meaning: used to introduce a fact that should be considered.

To bring up good kids you have to be a firm parent but at the same time sympathetic.

But then (again)

Meaning: the expression is used when you have a new idea which is different or opposite from the one you just said.

Sean is irresponsible and untidy but then again, he is also friendly, kind and polite.

Despite all this

Meaning: even though some other things are happening, something different still appears to be true.

Despite all this, very little attention has been given to the winner of the competition compared to other competitors.

Meaning: used to introduce a statement which is in contrast with something previously stated.

Meaning: eventually, after some time.

This diet is effective but in the long run, you will gain all the lost kilos back.

On the one hand… on the other hand…

Meaning: used to compare two opposite facts.

On the one hand, they wanted to live abroad but on the other, they didn’t want to leave their families.

While it may be true

Meaning: used to say that something is true although some people do not agree.

While it may be true that the flood hit the poor population mostly, the government stated that it hit all citizens equally.
