Hello English learners. Welcome to a new lesson. English students are often puzzled over the words job and work so I thought it would be a good idea to explain the difference between the nouns job, work, career once and for all.
Job
Job is a countable noun. It refers to temporary or permanent work you do for a living.
- Lorna got a job as a fashion designer at a fashion company.
- Many people lost their jobs during the economic crisis.
- Chris is a gardener and he enjoys his job.
- Sam applied for a job with good prospects for promotion.
- How many candidates are there for this job?
Other words for job are profession, employment, occupation and position.
- Simon left the profession of an architect to become a businessman.
- This company gives employment to disabled people.
- Engineering is often seen as a male occupation.
- After his doctorate, he accepted a position as a teaching assistant at the university.
Work
The uncountable noun work refers to doing a job for money. It has to do with your workplace.
- I usually start work at 8 and finish at 5. (not I usually start job at 8)
- We never go to work on Sundays.
The noun work has a wider meaning than the noun job.
- It takes a lot of work to design and build a house.
- The Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce is a great piece of work.
- Jill does some secretarial work for a friend.
- We will begin the work on the project on Monday.
- Work makes the workman.
Career
Career refers to your work or more jobs you do during your work life during which you advance and get more responsibilities.
- Michael has a distinguished career as an engineer.
- My grandpa told us about his teaching career.
- Darren made a successful career as a politician.
