How to Write an Interesting Article in English | B2 Writing Tips

Learning how to write an interesting article is an important skill for English learners, especially if you are preparing for B2 First or want to improve your writing in general. A good article should catch the reader’s attention, organise ideas clearly and use a friendly, natural tone.

In this lesson, you will learn how to choose a good title, write a strong introduction, develop your ideas and finish your article effectively. This is especially important in exams such as B2 First, where you may be asked to write an article for a school magazine, website, blog, or newsletter.

What is an Article?

An article is a piece of writing written for readers. It usually appears in a magazine, newspaper, blog, school website, or newsletter.

Articles are often written to:

  • inform readers about a topic
  • give opinions or advice
  • describe experiences
  • entertain the reader
  • encourage people to think about something

Unlike an essay, an article is usually more personal, lively, and direct. You can speak to the reader, ask questions, and use a friendly tone.

For example:

  • Have you ever tried to learn a new skill and felt like giving up after a few days?

This kind of opening immediately involves the reader and makes the article feel more interesting.

Understand the Task First

Before you start writing, read the task carefully. Ask yourself:

  • Who am I writing for?
  • Why am I writing this article?
  • What style should I use?
  • What points do I need to include?

For example, if the task says:

You have seen this announcement in your school magazine:

What makes a hobby interesting? Write an article about a hobby you enjoy and explain why other students should try it.

In this case, you need to write for other students. Your style should be friendly and engaging. You should describe your hobby and explain why it is worth trying.

Choose an Interesting Title

The title is the first thing the reader sees. A boring title can make even a good article look dull. A good title should make the reader curious.

Instead of:

My Favourite Hobby

you could write:

Why Photography Changed the Way I See the World

Instead of:

Learning English

you could write:

Can English Really Open New Doors?

Instead of:

Healthy Living

you could write:

Small Habits That Can Change Your Life

A strong title does not need to be complicated. It just needs to sound inviting.

Start with a Strong Introduction

The introduction should make the reader want to continue. Do not begin in a flat or mechanical way.

Avoid openings like:

  • In this article, I am going to write about my hobby.

This is clear, but it is not very interesting.

A better introduction could be:

  • Have you ever found an activity that helps you relax, learn something new, and forget about your worries at the same time? For me, that activity is photography.

This opening is much more natural because it asks a question and creates interest.

Here are some good ways to start an article:

Ask a question:

  • Have you ever wondered why some people never get bored?

Use a surprising statement:

  • You do not need a lot of money to enjoy an exciting hobby.

Speak directly to the reader:

  • If you are looking for a new way to relax after a busy day, this might be perfect for you.

Describe a situation:

  • It was raining heavily, I had no plans, and I was feeling bored. That was the day I discovered painting.

Organise Your Article Clearly

A good article should be easy to follow. Most articles have three main parts:

1. Introduction

This introduces the topic and catches the reader’s attention.

2. Main Body

This gives details, examples, opinions, or advice. You can divide the main body into two or three paragraphs.

3. Conclusion

This ends the article in a natural way. You can summarise your opinion, give advice, or leave the reader with something to think about.

A simple article plan could look like this:

Title: Why Everyone Should Try Photography

Paragraph 1: Introduce the topic and ask a question.

Paragraph 2: Explain why photography is enjoyable.

Paragraph 3: Explain how it can help you notice the world around you.

Paragraph 4: Recommend it to the reader and end positively.

how to write an interesting articleUse a Friendly and Natural Tone

Articles are usually more relaxed than essays or reports. This means you can use:

  • contractions: don’t, can’t, it’s
  • direct questions
  • personal examples
  • lively adjectives
  • expressions that speak to the reader

For example:

  • You don’t have to be an expert to enjoy photography. In fact, some of the best photos are taken by people who simply notice small, beautiful moments.

This sounds warm and natural.

However, avoid being too informal. Do not use slang, text-message language, or jokes that might not be appropriate.

Avoid:

  • Photography is super cool and awesome lol.

Better:

  • Photography is a creative and enjoyable hobby that can help you see everyday life in a completely new way.

How to Write an Interesting Article: Make Your Article Engaging

To make your article more interesting, try to include some of these techniques:

Ask Questions

Questions involve the reader.

  • Have you ever wanted to escape from stress for a while?
  • What would happen if you spent ten minutes a day doing something creative?

Use Examples

Examples make your ideas clearer.

  • For example, when I started taking photos of ordinary streets, I began to notice colours, shapes, and details I had never seen before.

Use Personal Experience

A personal touch makes your writing more believable.

  • I first tried photography during a school trip, and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it.

Use Descriptive Language

Good adjectives can bring your writing to life.

Instead of:

  • It was a good experience.

write:

  • It was a peaceful, creative, and surprisingly rewarding experience.

Common Mistakes When Writing an Article

1. Writing Like an Essay

An article should not sound too formal or serious. It should feel more like you are talking to the reader.

Too formal:

  • This article will examine the advantages of photography as a leisure activity.

Better:

  • Photography is one of those hobbies that can make ordinary life feel a little more special.

2. Forgetting the Reader

Remember that an article is written for someone. Try to involve the reader.

Instead of only writing:

  • I enjoy reading books.

write:

  • If you want a hobby that helps you relax and learn at the same time, reading could be perfect for you.

3. Having No Clear Paragraphs

Do not write one long block of text. Clear paragraphs make your article easier to read.

Each paragraph should have one main idea.

4. Using a Boring Ending

Do not end suddenly.

Weak ending:

  • That is all about my hobby.

Better ending:

  • So, if you are looking for a hobby that is creative, relaxing, and easy to start, why not pick up a camera and see where it takes you?

Why Photography Is the Perfect Hobby

Have you ever wanted to slow down and notice the world around you? In our busy lives, we often rush from one place to another without really looking at the small details. That is one reason why I believe photography is such a wonderful hobby.

One of the best things about photography is that you do not need expensive equipment to begin. A simple phone camera is enough. You can take pictures of your friends, your neighbourhood, nature, or even everyday objects at home. The important thing is not the camera, but the way you look at things.

Photography is also a great way to be creative. When you take a photo, you have to think about light, colour, shape, and mood. For example, a quiet street after the rain can look beautiful if you notice the reflections in the water. Small moments suddenly become special.

Another reason I enjoy photography is that it helps me relax. When I go for a walk with my camera, I forget about my worries for a while. I start looking more carefully at trees, buildings, people, and little details I normally ignore.

So, if you are looking for a hobby that is creative, relaxing, and easy to start, why not try photography? You might be surprised by how much beauty you can find in ordinary places.
