Plural of Nouns in English
Hello, dear English learners! Welcome to a new grammar lesson from My Lingua Academy. Plural of Nouns in English
Today, we will look at how to form plurals in English — one of the first grammar topics every learner meets, yet still full of little exceptions and surprises. By the end of this lesson, you’ll know how to form regular and irregular plurals, when not to add -s, and how to handle tricky cases like children, sheep, and data.
Regular Plural Nouns
Most English nouns form the plural by simply adding -s.
| Singular | Plural |
| cat | cats |
| dog | dogs |
| car | cars |
| student | students |
| book | books |
Examples:
- I have two cats and a dog.
- The students are studying for their exams.
Plurals Ending in -es
Add -es to nouns ending in -s, -ss, -sh, -ch, -x, or -z.

| quiz | quizzes |
Examples:

Nouns Ending in -y
If a noun ends in a consonant + y, change y → i and add -es.
If a noun ends in a vowel + y, just add -s.
| Singular | Plural |
| baby | babies |
| city | cities |
| boy | boys |
| key | keys |
Examples:
- The babies are sleeping.
- There are many beautiful cities in Italy.
Nouns Ending in -f or -fe
Some nouns ending in -f or -fe change the ending to -ves.

…but not all! Some just take -s:

Plurals of Compound Nouns
Usually, the main word becomes plural.

Examples:
