Hello English students! School is a large part of our lives. Some find it fun and enjoyable with plenty of friends and good lessons, while others might describe it as strict or even somewhat monotonous. Today, we will examine the adjectives to describe school, including the atmosphere, teachers, school buildings, and the feelings of students at school. You will learn their meanings and see them in example sentences, so you can use them in everyday conversations, stories, or even in your Cambridge exams (B2 First/C1 Advanced). By the end, you will be ready to talk about your school — past or present — in a more natural and colourful way.

Friendly              kind and easy to approach. The teachers are very friendly, so students feel comfortable asking questions.
Welcoming        making people feel accepted and at ease. The new students found the school welcoming from the very first day.
Supportive         helpful and encouraging. My classmates are really supportive whenever someone struggles.
Inclusive             accepting of all students regardless of background. The school is inclusive and celebrates cultural diversity.
Inspiring             motivating and giving new ideas. Our headteacher gave an inspiring speech at the assembly.
Respectful          showing politeness and consideration. Students are taught to be respectful towards teachers and each other.
Motivating         encouraging students to work hard. The teachers use motivating lessons to keep us interested.

Negative atmosphere

Strict     having many rules and expecting obedience. The school is very strict about uniforms.
Stressful             causing worry and pressure. Exams can make the school year feel stressful.
Overcrowded    having too many students in one place. The classrooms are often overcrowded, which makes it hard to concentrate.
Competitive      focusing strongly on winning or being the best. Some private schools are very competitive about grades.
Unfriendly          not warm or welcoming. The new teacher seemed a bit unfriendly at first.
Chaotic disorganised and noisy. The playground was chaotic during the lunch break.

 

Size and facilities

Large     big in size. It’s a large school with over 1,000 students.
Small     not big in size. My village only has one small school.
Spacious             having plenty of room. The classrooms are spacious and bright.
Modern              using the latest style or technology. The school library is modern, with computers and tablets.
Old-fashioned   not modern, traditional. The desks in the classroom look very old-fashioned.
Well-equipped  having good and sufficient resources. The science lab is well-equipped with everything we need.
Underfunded    lacking enough money or resources. Many rural schools are underfunded and need more support.

Prestigious         having a high reputation and respect. She studied at a prestigious international school.

Innovative         using new and creative ideas. The school uses innovative methods to teach science.
Traditional         following long-established customs. The school has a traditional uniform policy.
Rigorous             very thorough and strict. The programme is rigorous and requires hard work.

Intimidating      making people feel nervous or afraid. The headteacher can be a bit intimidating.
Lively    full of energy and activity. The classrooms are always lively with discussions.
Energetic            having lots of energy. The students are young and very energetic.

Urban   located in a city. The urban school is close to many museums.
Suburban           located near the edge of a city. The family moved to a house near a suburban school.
