We will explore modal verbs like ‘can’t’ and ‘mustn’t’, as well as other phrases such as ‘not allowed to’ and ‘don’t let’. Prohibition in the present and future
Here are the most common ways to say something is forbidden:
| Expression | Meaning | Example Sentence |
| Can’t | not allowed (general rules, daily life) | You can’t park here – this area is for buses only. |
| Mustn’t | strong prohibition (rules, laws, formal settings) | You mustn’t use your phone while driving. |
| Not let | someone refuses permission | My brother won’t let me borrow his bike. |
| (Be) not allowed to | formal rule or regulation | We’re not allowed to eat in the library. |
| Not allow (somebody) to | to forbid another person | The company doesn’t allow employees to smoke inside. |
Modal Verbs and Phrases for Prohibition
Common Mistake:
Don’t have to
Don’t have to ≠ forbidden
It means not necessary.
Prohibition: You mustn’t park on the pavement. (= It’s against the rules.)
Lack of necessity: You don’t have to take a taxi. (= It’s optional; you can walk if you want.)
Prohibition in the past
To talk about rules or restrictions in the past, we use:

| Couldn’t | I couldn’t go out after 9 p.m. when I was a child. |
| Didn’t let | Our teacher didn’t let us drink water in class. |
| Wasn’t allowed to | She wasn’t allowed to travel alone at 15. |
| Didn’t allow (somebody) to | My parents didn’t allow me to have a pet dog. |
Modal Verbs and Phrases for Prohibition
Note: We don’t use mustn’t for the past.
❌ I mustn’t stay out late when I was young.
✅ I wasn’t allowed to stay out late when I was young.
