21 Adjectives of Touch

Adjectives of touch, or tactile adjectives, are words employed to describe the feel of something. They vary from describing texture to temperature and wetness. These are extremely useful when writing descriptively or when you are required to evoke particular sensory sensations in writing or speech. For instance, saying that a material is “silky smooth” not only describes the material’s texture but also conveys the high-quality or luxurious nature of the material. Here is a list grouped into a few categories.

 

Texture-Based Adjectives

Smooth

Definition: a surface that is not uneven or irregular.

  • The marble surface felt smooth to my fingertips. Adjectives of Touch

Rough

Meaning: refers to an irregular or rough texture.

  • His rough hands were rough due to years of hard work.

Silky

Meaning: suggests a very smooth and soft texture, like silk.

  • His hair was silky, flowing effortlessly through my fingers.

Velvety

Meaning: refers to a soft, heavy texture like velvet.

  • The velvety texture of the chocolate cake dissolved in my mouth. Adjectives of Touch

Fuzzy

Meaning: implies a surface that is clothed in fine, soft fibres or hair.

  • The girl hugged the teddy bear, which was fuzzy and comforting.

Gritty

Meaning: implies a coarse texture made up of fine, hard particles.

  • The sand between my fingers felt gritty, rough with tiny grains sticking to my skin.

Bumpy

Meaning: implies a surface that is clad with small bumps or lumps.

  • She ran her fingers over the bumpy surface of the tree bark, feeling its rough texture.

Scratchy

Meaning: describes a surface that might scratch lightly.  Adjectives of Touch

  • The old blanket was scratchy and worn out from years of use.

Firmness and Consistency

Soft

Meaning: describes a surface that is smooth and yielding, pleasant to touch.

  • The kitten’s fur felt soft against my skin.

Hard

Meaning: describes a solid and hard surface that does not yield to pressure.

  • The concrete floor was hard and cold under my feet.

Spongy

Meaning: suggests a soft, porous texture that yields to pressure.

  • The cake was so moist and spongy that it sprang back when pressed.

Rubbery

Meaning: implies elasticity, a surface that bends or springs back when compressed.

  • The new gym mat had a rubbery texture with nice grip and cushioning.

Tactile Sensations

Sticky

Meaning: describes surfaces that cling or adhere, often due to a tacky or glue-like substance.

  • My hands felt sticky after peeling the ripe mango. Adjectives of Touch

Slimy

Meaning: suggests a smooth, watery, and uncomfortably slippery surface.

  • The pond water was slimy, covered with an algae film.

Slippery

Meaning: an oily, wet or smooth surface which is difficult to grasp or walk on.

  • The bathroom floor was slippery, and I had to be careful.

Clammy

Meaning: describing something uncomfortably damp, slightly sticky, and a little cold to the touch.

  • The air was humid, making my skin feel clammy and uncomfortable.

Temperature and Moisture Sensations

Cold

Meaning: denotes a surface or body of low temperature, which typically yields a chilling sensation.

  • The metal door handle was cold to the ends of my fingers on a winter morning. Adjectives of Touch

Warm

Meaning: denotes a warmly above-average temperature, typically implying comfort or warmth.

  • She wrapped her hands around the warm mug of tea, enjoying its soothing heat.

Hot

Meaning: refers to a hot temperature which can be intense or hurtful to the hand.

  • Be careful – the stove is still hot and could scald your hand.

Damp

Meaning: refers to a wet surface, often cold or unpleasant to the hand. Adjectives of Touch

  • The towel was damp after a night out in the open.

Dry

Meaning: indicates no dampness, and it typically feels crunchy or gritty. 

  • The old book’s pages were dry and brittle, crumbling at the edges.
