Should

Ought to

The modal verb “ought to” is similar to “should”. We can use it to give advice or recommendations. The structure is subject + ought to + base form of the verb.  It is used to suggest that something is a good idea or advisable, often implying a moral or logical obligation.

• They ought to spend more time on research before making a decision.

Have to

Could

“Could” is a modal verb used to suggest possibilities or offer gentle recommendations. The structure is subject + could + base form of the verb. It is used to suggest actions or options that are possible and worth considering, but it does not carry the same sense of urgency as “must” or “should.”

Would

We can use “would” to give polite and indirect recommendations and suggestions. The structure is subject + would + base form of the verb. It is used to make the recommendation sound more polite and considerate.

• I would recommend visiting the botanical gardens; they are beautiful this time of year.
• We would suggest trying out the local cuisine for an authentic experience.
• You would benefit from joining study groups to enhance your learning.
