Alike
Meaning: similar, the same.
- The three siblings looked very much alike.
- It is not very common to see couples who dress alike.
Also
Meaning: in addition, equally, as well.
- The chocolate they make is sweet, but it is also a bit bitter.
- Italian cuisine is famous for its pasta dishes. The Chinese also have great pasta dishes.
Both … and …
Meaning: correlative conjunction both … and …used to say that something is not true of one thing or person only but also of another.
- Both Mary and her children agreed that the film was exciting.
- Both grammar and spelling are important when writing an essay.

By the same token
Meaning: in a similar or the same way.
- The government tried to keep down the rebels in the area and by the same token they wanted to increase their own influence.
- It was necessary for the party representatives to be present and by the same token for the citizens as well.
Equally
Meaning: in the same way.
- This bird is equally at home in the forest and by the river.
- The flat and the house were equally impressive.
In a like manner
Meaning: in the same or similar way; sharing the same or similar qualities.
- The twins held their toys in a like manner in the photo.
- The presenter’s intention was to make all attendees at the meeting think in a like manner of his project.
In the same way
Meaning: likewise, similarly.
- The supplement didn’t seem to affect Helen in the same way as her friend.
- All four of our children were treated in the same way.
Like
Meaning: the same as, similar.
- The whole journey was like a dream.
- You look like a fat pig in that dress.
Likewise
Meaning: in a similar manner.
- The dinner was delicious, and likewise was the dessert.
- The Committee decided to adopt a new Law on Discrimination hoping that the Assembly will wish to do likewise.

Like two peas in a pod
Meaning: similar, the same.
- The twin brothers looked like two peas in a pod.
- The two friends were very close and therefore like two peas in a pod.
Not only … but also …
Meaning: used to join two clauses and emphasize the similarity between them.
- Exercise will not only lower blood pressure but also protect you against cardiovascular diseases.
- Monica translated not only from Japanese but also from Vietnamese.
Similar to
Meaning: a person, thing, or situation is similar to another.
- The roofs of the buildings in the city centre were similar to those in the suburbs.
- Anna’s pregnancy seemed similar to her previous two.
Similarly
Meaning: in a similar way.
- Both sisters used to dress similarly when they were teenagers.
- The atmosphere in the hotel was dark and gloomy and similarly was their room.
Too
Meaning: in addition, as well, alike; typically placed at the end of a sentence.
- Nick ate too much. He drank a lot, too.
- They use sustainable energy in Holland a lot; Japan does that, too.
