You certainly know that white is the colour of milk or snow and that you have probably heard that someone is as white as a ghost, as white as a sheet of paper or that something is as white as snow. There are foods such as white bread, white rice, white chocolate, white sugar, and white wine. People with pale skin colour are often referred to as white people. Meaning: to take all somebody’s money.
We have to rent a new apartment. Our landlady will bleed us white.

Meaning: it is easy to understand what is going on in a black-and-white situation. It is often used in a negative context.
There must be a simple, black-and-white solution to your problem.
We need to think things through. It isn’t all black and white.

Meaning: if we say that black is white, we believe that the truth is the opposite to a real situation.

Meaning: something in black and white is not only said but also written and printed.

Meaning: to be very pale.
Pamela was as white as a sheet when she heard the bad news.

Meaning: a Christmas when it snows or there is snow present around.

Meaning: a person who works in an office. Opposite of blue-collar workers who perform manual labour.
Many white-collar workers will be made redundant because of the closure.
White elephant
Meaning: a possession which is not only expensive or challenging to maintain, but also useless or problematic.
The new building soon became an expensive white elephant. They couldn’t afford to maintain it and eventually sold it.
White flag
Meaning: a symbol that people involved in a battle use to wave to show that they accept defeat.
The white flag was up. The town had surrendered.
White-glove
Meaning: which provides high-quality service.
The health centre is famous for its excellent white-glove service.
White hope
Meaning: someone or something expected to become successful in the future.
Our young member is the white hope of our party.

White horses
Meaning: waves that are white at the top.
As the wind was getting stronger, small waves were becoming bigger white horses.
White knight
Meaning: a person or an organisation that helps other people or organisations who are in difficult situations.
The board of the company were hoping to find a white knight who would save them from bankruptcy.
White lie
Meaning: a harmless lie, usually told to children.
I told Sara a white lie that I hadn’t replied to her email because it must’ve gone to spam. But the truth is that I deleted it by mistake.
Whiter than white
Meaning: a person who has never done anything wrong.
The newspaper represented the new prime minister as a whiter than white person.
White wedding
Meaning: refers to a traditional Christian wedding in a church.
Sally was a romantic person, and she wanted a proper white wedding.
