Ways to Say that You are Certain about Something

Certain

Meaning: to be completely sure of something, to know that something is true.

  • I’m certain that this photograph was taken when I was 5 years old.
  • Sandra felt absolutely certain that she’d never seen that man before.
  • The candidate seemed certain to win the election.

Positive

Meaning: certain that something is true.

  • I’m absolutely positive that I saw my keys on the desk this morning.
  • I’m positive that man acts in the film we watched last week.
  • Milly was positive that she gave her neighbour the parcel.

Sure

Meaning: certain.

  • I’m sure it’ll do you good to drink this tea for cold.
  • What makes you sure this is the correct answer?
  • It isn’t easy to be sure what the weather will be like next week. It’s so changeable.

Ways to Say that You are Certain about Something

Definite

Meaning: not likely to change; sure.

  • The manager was definite that there will be no meetings the next week.
  • We tried to lower the price but the seller was pretty definite about it. 
  • Is it definite that you’re coming tomorrow?

Confident

Meaning: to be certain that something will happen or that it is true.

  • Mark was confident that the prices of real estate will go down.
  • The police were confident of catching the thief.
  • He was quite confident that he would pass the test.

Convinced

Meaning: completely certain about something.

  • The judge and the jury were convinced that the accused was guilty.
  • The man tried to run away, convinced that a rabid dog was chasing him.
  • Lorna was convinced that some day she will meet Mr Right.

Ways to Say that You are Certain about Something

No doubt/question

Meaning: use it to say that what you say is certain.

  • There is no doubt we will get home before midnight.
  • Mira is the best candidate so far, no question about it.
  • We will, no doubt meet again next week, and by then so long!

To know for a fact

Meaning: to be certain that something is true.

  • I know for a fact that Jason didn’t sleep at home last night.
  • John knew for a fact that the air in the area was polluted with carbon monoxide.
  • I may not be sure what the weather will be like tomorrow but I know for a fact that I’ll get up at 6.

Correct me if I’m wrong

Meaning: a way to say you are certain that something is true, especially if you want to disagree with someone politely.

  • Correct me if I’m wrong, but haven’t we arranged to meet at 10 o’clock?
  • Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think that Melanie took a day off and that’s why she’s not coming to work today.
  • Dear Alan, correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t I tell you that this document is confidential?

Meaning: use the phrase to express your opinion about something you are certain about.

Ways to Say that You are Certain about Something

Unless I’m mistaken

Meaning: use it to state politely that what you are saying is true.

  • Unless I’m mistaken, there was a car parking here 20 years ago.
  • Unless I’m mistaken, Mildred is entitled to unemployment benefits.
  • Unless I’m mistaken, this paragraph was changed.

Beyond doubt

Meaning: use it to say that things are so certain that there is no doubt about them.

  • All the evidence proves that he is innocent beyond doubt.
  • That the building was more than 100 years old was beyond doubt.
  • The survey proved that beyond doubt people prefer going on holiday to warm countries.
