When we talk about art, words matter. A painting, sculpture, or photograph can make us feel calm, excited, confused, or even slightly uncomfortable — and English gives us a wonderfully rich vocabulary to describe all these reactions. Adjectives to describe an artwork

If you are preparing for exams like B2 First (FCE) or C1 Advanced (CAE), you will often need to describe and evaluate an artwork, a photo, or a visual scene. Instead of saying “It’s nice” or “It’s interesting”, you should aim for more precise, expressive adjectives.

Beautiful

Meaning: very attractive and pleasing to look at.

The painting is beautiful, but what I like most is its simplicity.

Stunning

Meaning: extremely impressive or attractive.

The use of light in this artwork is absolutely stunning.

Striking

Meaning: very noticeable and impressive.

The most striking feature of the portrait is the woman’s expression.

Breathtaking

Meaning: so impressive it makes you stop and stare.

The landscape is breathtaking, especially the colours of the sky.

Elegant

Meaning: attractive in a simple, stylish, and graceful way.

The sculpture has an elegant shape and very clean lines.        

Eye-catching

Meaning: immediately attracts attention.

The bright red background makes the painting very eye-catching.

Detailed

Meaning: showing many small, careful details.

The artist’s drawings are incredibly detailed.

Minimalist

Meaning: very simple, using very few colours or shapes.

It’s a minimalist artwork, but it still feels powerful.

Abstract

Meaning: not showing real objects in a realistic way.

At first, the abstract painting is hard to understand.

Realistic

Meaning: showing things as they appear in real life.

The portrait is so realistic that it looks like a photograph.

Stylised

Meaning: not realistic, but shown in a special artistic way.

The figures are stylised rather than realistic.

Useful exam-friendly phrases

To sound more natural and advanced, encourage your students to use phrases like:

  • What stands out to me is…
  • The most striking feature is…
  • It gives the impression that…
  • It seems to represent/symbolise…
  • The artist appears to be trying to show…

What stands out to me is the contrast between light and shadow.

The painting gives the impression that the scene is calm but tense at the same time.

Final tip

When describing an artwork in writing or speaking exams, always try to describe what you can see, interpret what it might mean and react emotionally or personally. Good adjectives help you do all three.
