Fit, Match, Suit, Go Well with
Hello English learners, and welcome to another lesson! Today, we’re going to look at four verbs that are easy to confuse: fit, match, suit, go well with. They are all used when talking about clothes, style, or appearance — but they don’t mean the same thing. Let’s break them down with examples so you will never mix them up again.
Fit
The verb fit describes the size and shape of clothes in relation to your body.
- If something fits, it is the right size for you (not too big, not too small).
- Think: Does this physically fit my body?
Examples:
- This shirt fits me perfectly. It is not too tight and not too loose.
- Those shoes don’t fit me. They’re one size too small.
Fit, Match, Suit, Go Well With
Match
Match means that two or more things look good together because they are the same colour, pattern, or style.
- You compare one item with another.
- Think: Do these things go together as a pair?
Examples:
- Her bag matches her shoes. Both are red.
- Your tie doesn’t match your jacket. They clash!
Suit
Suit is about how something looks on a person.
- If something suits you, it makes you look good, stylish, or appropriate.
- Think: Does this clothing look good on me?
Examples:
- That dress really suits you – it makes your eyes look brighter.
- Short hair doesn’t suit me; I look better with longer hair.
Fit, Match, Suit, Go Well With
Go well with
Go well with is similar to match, but it is more general.
- It means two things look good together, even if they’re not the same colour or style.
- Think: Do these things complement each other?
Examples:
- This white blouse goes well with almost any skirt.
- Cheese goes well with wine. (Notice: it’s not only for clothes – it can be for food, music, or ideas too!)
