Writing a Review for B2 First (FCE)

When writing a review for the B2 First (FCE), you should understand that you are not just expected to describe the topic – whether it is a book, a movie, a restaurant, or any other experience – but also to judge it. The review should mix objective observation with your own subjective opinion in order to give the reader a clear and balanced impression of the product. This double-pronged approach lies at the centre of FCE review tasks and distinguishes them from more descriptive or argumentative texts that are more linear in structure.

Structure of review

Your review’s structure is vital. You will typically start with a title that informs the reader immediately what is being reviewed, usually highlighting the title of the film, book, or product. This should be followed by an introduction that mentions what is being reviewed and what you will discuss. The body is typically divided into paragraphs: the first on the detailed description of the subject and the rest on commentary – analysis, opinions, and critique from you. Summing it all up with a clear recommendation wraps up the piece, telling the reader on whether to experience or not to experience the subject. Writing a Review for B2 First (FCE)

Tone and style of review

Your tone and language are also important. Unlike formal essays, B2 First reviews can have a more conversational, engaging register. You can use contractions, idiomatic language, and even phrasal verbs to make your writing lively. However, even though the tone is informal, it must be clear and coherent so that your reasoning and evaluation are communicated in a considered and convincing manner.

Analysing task instructions

First, read the task instructions carefully before you start writing. Highlight the sections which inform you about what you are to describe and what aspects require comment.

Identify your audience

Your audience is also worth defining as this will impact how you express your opinions and the level of formality you adopt. This kind of attention to detail aligns your response with the demands of the exam and makes your critique interesting and relevant. Writing a Review for B2 First (FCE)

Practice and preparation

In addition, practice is valuable. Working through sample answers and model reviews will enable you to gain a sense of the expected standard structure and language features in the FCE review task. Practice makes perfect, making you confident and your final product coherent, convincing, and compelling – a writing skill that extends beyond examinations to everyday writing tasks.

Review 1

Exam Task:

You see this announcement in your university English-language newspaper: Book reviews wanted. Did you read a book in which the protagonist did something surprising? Write to us a review of the book, stating what the protagonist did and why it was surprising. Tell us if you would recommend this book to other people. Best reviews will be published in the magazine.

Shattered Illusions: An Immersive Search Beyond Expectations

I have just finished reading Shattered Illusions by Anne Mather and was totally enthralled by its intellectually charged plot. Alex, in a sudden departure from the comfort and ordinariness of life, opts for an isolated reality with the price of losing friends and a good career. The extreme decision shocked me, but even more, it made me rethink my concepts of individual courage and seek reality. Writing a Review for B2 First (FCE)

The author skillfully interweaves suspense with their rich, lush imagery that delves deep into Alex’s tortured mind. His inner struggles and life-altering encounters sway off the page, drawing readers into his skewed mindset.

Each unexpected twist in the narrative makes us consider our own self-satisfied choices, and thus the story is a reflective experience with resonance on multiple levels.

In short, I highly recommend Shattered Illusions to anyone who loves reading books that are both intellectually stimulating and emotionally resonant. It is a powerful reminder of the rich experiences that exist beyond those who are willing to venture out of their comfort zones. This book is not only an excellent read; it is a chance to reflect on the numerous possibilities that life has to offer.

Review 2

Exam task:

You recently visited a local café called “Café Luminance” that left a lasting impression on you. Write a review for a local magazine detailing your experience.

Café Luminance: Where Tranquillity Meets Taste

I discovered Café Luminance; a gem tucked away from city activity. I was wrapped in a cosy, welcoming atmosphere when I walked in – warm natural light streaming through large windows, vibrant local art work adorning the walls, and mellow background music that permeated the room with relaxation. The interior room was cosy and homelike. Writing a Review for B2 First (FCE)

The coffee, of course, is Café Luminance’s pièce de résistance. The baristas are practically artists, who infuse a bit of extra love into every cup. I sampled their signature beverage, the honey cappuccino, where a delicate drizzle of honey was perfectly balanced with rich espresso and velvety milk. To accompany excellent coffee, the café offers a selection of freshly baked pastries and snacks prepared with quality, locally sourced ingredients.

Service-wise, the cafe is superb. The service is friendly, attentive, and eager to make personalized recommendations. If you’re looking for a quiet corner to work or a comfortable spot to sit and reconnect with an old friend, Café Luminance is your ideal sanctuary. I would highly suggest this wonderful cafe experience – everyone’s retreat from the ordinary world.

Review 3

Exam task:

You have just watched a film review at your nearby cinema. Write a review of a local newspaper in which you summarize the plot of the film, performance, camera work, and score. Tell what you liked and disliked about the film, and conclude with a good recommendation. Writing a Review for B2 First (FCE)

Midnight Escape: A Journey into the Unknown

I recently got to see Midnight Escape, a suspenseful mystery that had me guessing from start to finish. The film is about a bunch of friends who discover a secret hidden from them while on an expedition in the middle of an abandoned city at a late hour. With shocking turns that make you question trusting every character, the plot appears to keep itself under wraps throughout.

The acting is convincing, with each actor putting genuine emotion and reality into their role. The camerawork falls back on intelligent shadow work and dynamic camerawork to create an atmospheric, unsettling sense of immersion, supported by a spine-tingling background score that increases the tension.

While a couple of moments were somewhat predictable, Midnight Escape is a fun ride that effectively balances suspense and emotion. Writing a Review for B2 First (FCE)

I would highly recommend this film for any fan who likes a meticulously produced thriller filled with surprises – a movie which haunts in your mind after the credits disappear.
