After nearly a decade of teaching English through online video lessons, I can confirm that these platforms have become incredibly popular. Not only are they easy to use, but they also offer excellent performance. Most apps now provide essential features such as:

• high-quality audio and video calls

• smart messaging tools

• screen sharing

• call recording

• live subtitles

And the best part? Many of these features are available for free.

Most platforms are updated regularly, meaning the technology only gets better over time. They’re not just useful for learning; they’re also widely used in business communication. They allow you to chat with friends and family, attend meetings from anywhere, and—of course—take private language lessons without leaving your home.

These tools save a huge amount of time and money. You can learn from any location, choose the time that suits you best, and select from an enormous range of teachers and programmes. Plus, you can use almost any device: laptop, tablet, or smartphone.

What about the Disadvantages?

Naturally, no system is perfect. Occasionally, you may experience dropped connections, microphone issues, or less-than-ideal sound quality. But don’t worry—these problems are usually temporary and easy to fix. And with so many competing apps on the market, developers are improving performance all the time.

Prices vary from school to school, but many charge around $12 to $25 per 45-minute lesson, which is often cheaper than taking lessons in person. And let’s be honest: there’s something wonderfully practical about learning from your own living room. No commuting, no rushing, no fuss—just you, your teacher, and a cup of tea if you fancy one.

Are Online Lessons Effective?

Absolutely. Online learning usually means individual classes tailored to your needs. You work at your own pace, following goals that matter to you. More and more students choose one-to-one online lessons because they get personalised attention, unlimited chances to ask questions, and far more speaking practice than in a group of 5–10 people.

Is Online Learning Suitable for All Levels?

Lower-level learners can still benefit, but it requires extra patience, clear teaching techniques, and careful lesson planning.
