Different Ways to Say “I don’t Care”

I don’t mind

If you say that you don’t mind, it means that any solution is OK with you. It is more polite than I don’t care.

  • “Do you mind if I open the window?” “No, I don’t mind.” 
  • I asked Fiona and she said she didn’t mind whether we go out or stay at home tonight.
  • You can stay here and watch TV or read a book in case you get bored; I don’t mind.
  • I don’t mind if they accuse me of being impolite. I’m the way I am.

It makes no difference to me

Here is a similar expression to I don’t mind. When you say that something makes no difference to you, you say that you’re indifferent and don’t mind about something at all because it doesn’t affect you in any way.

  • My birthday is on Friday but we can celebrate it on Saturday if you wish. It makes no difference to me.
  • It makes no difference to me if the flight is delayed or not. I’m not going.
  • I’m a bilingual person. It makes no difference to me which language we’re talking in.
  • You know that it makes no difference to me but I think that you can’t afford to pay that much.

 I couldn’t care less

You can use this expression when you’re annoyed or upset and someone is bothering you.  It is a way of saying that you don’t care at all. 

  • “Have you heard that Rose broke up with Bob?” “I couldn’t care less. I’ve got more important things in my mind.”
  • I didn’t ask you about it because I couldn’t care less about your opinion.
  • It was obvious that she couldn’t care less about what was going on.
  • I couldn’t care less who you’re spending your time with.

It doesn’t matter to me

This expression is similar to it makes no difference to me, so you can practically use it to say that any option suits you.

  • It doesn’t matter to me whether you pay me in advance or after the job is done.
  • As long as you don’t lie to me, it doesn’t really matter to me where you come from.
  • It doesn’t matter to me if it’s snowing or not.  It’s not Christmas.
  • To be honest, it doesn’t really matter to me whether I work from home or in the company’s office.

Who cares?

This is a very informal, colloquial phrase. You can use it to say that you don’t care about something at all.

  • Who cares what you think. If I cared about your opinion, I’d have asked you before I bought the car.
  • They say it’s going to be cold tomorrow, but who cares. We can throw a party inside the house.
  • Who cares if my sister’s adopted.
  • We’re going to spend a lot of money on that cruise but who cares. We’re going to have a whale of a time.

So what?

This is another colloquial expression that is a bit emphatic and may sound rude sometimes. Use it to show indifference.

  • I’ll be 40 next week. So what?
  • I went out with Simona. So what! Why would you care about my private life?
  • They are getting divorced. So what? You’d better mind your own business.
  • You two are married and you don’t listen to the same music. So what?

It’s not my problem

The meaning of this phrase is obvious. You can use it to show that you don’t care about something because you have nothing to do with it.

  • Why would I care how you’re going to pay back the money to the bank. It’s not my problem.
  • Well, if you want to wear that dress and make a fool of yourself, it’s really not my problem.
  • Don’t tell me that you don’t have time to do your housework. It’s not my problem.
  • Why don’t you let someone else worry about that? It’s not your problem.

I’m easy

Use the phrase I’m easy to tell someone that any of the two options suits you.

  • “Shall we go to a pizzeria or Chinese restaurant?” “I’m easy. Wherever you prefer.”
  • “Do you think we should rent a flat or a house?” ” You decide. I’m easy.”
  • You decide where we’re going on holiday. I’m easy.
  • If you don’t want to go to college, I’m easy. It’s your life.
