In case you have any doubts or insecurities about using “will” and “would”, read this post to clear things out.

WILL

  • Use “will” to talk about the future:

I’ll meet you on Sunday.

  •  Use “will” to say what you think will happen in the future:

I think Peter will be a great pianist. He’s so talented.

  • Use “will” for promises:

I promise I will make it up to you.

  • Use “will” for offers and requests:

I’ll lend you my car if you want.

This bag is too heavy. Will you help me, please?

  • Use will in the first conditional:

I’ll make dinner if you do the dishes.

 WOULD

  • Use “would” as a past form of “will”:

Brian said that he would help me. (in direct speech: Brian said, “I will help you”)

  • Use “would”  for offers and requests.

Would you like  some lemonade?

“Would you please calm down?”

  • Use “would” in the conditional sentences:

If I had a computer, I would type it myself.

If I had known you were coming I would have made a special dinner.

  • Use “would” in phrases such as:

Would you mind if I turned off the heating? It’s so hot in here.

“Would you open the window, please?

Would you like to join us on Saturday? We’re having a picnic.

I’d rather stay at home than travel all the way to Longleat on Sunday.
