There is a lot of fuss over these two words. Some think they are interchangeable, but the fact is that there is a big difference between them.
The word ‘sex’ refers to biological aspects, for example:
What is the sex of the baby?
It is easy to tell the sex of bees.
However, the word ‘gender’ is more complicated and it refers to the social role of a person, for example:
In the past, only actors of male gender could play in theatres.
Gender discrimination is forbidden by the law.
